What if you discovered the best ways to help a conflicted youth experience self-efficacy, emotional regulation, optimism, and positive social interactions required very little words from the adults around them?  Would this take some of the pressures off for saying the "right" things and maybe alleviate some of the worries around possibly saying the "wrong" things?

And what if even the most difficult to reach youth exhibited positive changes after you implemented some of the techniques discussed in this training?  Would witnessing these positive outcomes provide you with a renewed energy to get out of bed in the morning...a renewed energy in viewing this world with optimism?  Maybe you would feel better about others, including yourself!

This training is designed to provide tools for professionals and educators working with high risk youth who have either visible or non-visible conflicts with themselves and/or others.

One of the reasons it can be challenging to hold onto hope when working with high risk youth might be because our young people have either responded to traumatic life experiences through behavioral misconduct, social disconnect, and substance abuse/misuse...or, they have responded in ways that have either harmed themselves or others.  One of these traumatic responses would be difficult enough to address with the limited time most of us have with them, but how can we make a significant difference for all that plagues our conflicted youth? 

High-risk youth have an increased probability for experiencing/having experienced psychological trauma. One of the greatest barriers for professionals working with trauma survivors is the impact of retraumatization on resiliency and achievement. Retraumatization is one main reason why high-risk youth sometimes respond adversely to program interventions.  And sometimes we trigger a young person to re-experience a traumatic response/event when we extend our help and support.  Traumatic responses are complex and confusing, but with the right knowledge base of WHY traumatic reactions take place, professionals are at a great advantage to help the trauma-survivor overcome barriers of defeat and experience resilient stepping stones to self efficacy, self esteem, and self determinism.

Positive Youth Development is an evidence-based approach utilized to promote resiliency and healthy development of youth. When this approach is used effectively, high-risk youth are positioned well to acquire critical developmental assets through protective factors, which enable resiliency and recovery from trauma to transpire.

This dynamic and contemporary training offers professionals evidence-based tools for effective interventions with high-risk youth.

About the Instructor...

Ally Jamieson, MSW, has extensive experience counseling youth and families in crisis and working with psychiatric, dual-diagnosis, residential, court adjudicated, foster, homeless and runaway youth. She earned her Master’s Degree in Social Work and Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Portland State University. Ally began doctoral work at the University of British Columbia in September of 2011 to advance trauma-informed care practice and research in the field of social work.  She believes trauma-informed Positive Youth Development interactions have the very real capacity to increase rates of resiliency in youth who have experienced adversity and trauma while affording the youth work professional tools for successful engagement strategies and decreased rates of secondary stress.
